‘UCC Norwell Bread Run’ runs on simple gesture of service

Dr. Dave Patten back in 1993 organized the UCC Norwell Bread Run with a small group of volunteers. It was a simple premise with a big impact: Gather food donations from local businesses and deliver them to needy organizations. Over time the businesses donating, the volunteers transporting food and the recipient organizations have changed, but not the mission. It is a lot more than just bread. We get Dairy, Frozen Foods, Cereal, Bakery Products and much more.

Our current UCC Norwell team of 19 picks up 6 days a week and in February and March of this year a total of 8.6 tons of food were picked up from Panera Bread in Hanover and Stop & Shop in Norwell. The food was delivered to a variety of organizations serving the homeless, including:

  • Main Spring Homeless Shelter in Brockton

  • L Street Mission in Brockton

  • Yawkey Housing Resource Center in Quincy (formerly Father Bill’s)

  • Various local deliveries including Rehoboth House in Norwell

This equates to over 50 tons or over 100,000 pounds of food a year, delivered to those in need. A truly remarkable undertaking!

If you would be interested in helping out 1 day a week or a couple days a month, please email Carl Isihara. Thank you for your support!
